18 AWG Speaker wire is commonly used in home theaters, digital audio, and stereo speakers. 18 AWG Speaker wire is not built for nor rated for in-wall usage. How is it built? Well, speaker wire is built from two different conductors. While both of these conductors are made from finely stranded copper, only one of them is tinned. The other conductor is made from bare copper. They are designed this way for several reasons. Mostly to easily distinguish polarity. Additionally, both conductors are insulated with a translucent PVC jacket. This insulation is made to be flexible which makes installation easy.
How do you use 18 AWG speaker wire? You start by selecting the correct gauge. The gauge can be determined by figuring how long the wire needs to be. It's a good idea to always add a few extra feet. This leaves room for error and also keeps the run from becoming too tight. After you know the length of the wire, you need to consider the power requirements of your application. Once you know the length of your run and the power requirements, you can choose the correct gauge wire for your job.
